Election 2018, Option One
Jill Soloway on Donald Trump, Locker Rooms and Toxic Masculinity
This article talks about how nearly all sexual violence is done by men and how the fraise, “boys will be boys” will forever exsist and nothing will change. The article also talks about how there is also a term called, “locker-room talk” which isn’t just talk about women, it talks about different and certain kind of women. The author addresses this because it happens everywhere especially with our president Donald Trump states, “grab them by the p-y.” Jill Soloway explains to the readers how this needs to be addressed right away because if we let our president talk about anything in however way he wants to say what he is trying to say, then we are making it okay for everyone else to do so as well. More individuals will talk women in a terrible way which can create conflicts in elections.
This makes me think back to the reading “Safe Spaces.” The author August, talks about how we need to make safe enviroments for children to always feel welcomed and accepted, to not feel ashamed for who they are. If we continue teaching children in today’s generation that “locker-room talk” will always be a thing and the saying “boys will be boys” will never change is wrong. Teachers along with everyone need to start making this change now, where we change young children’s minds to treat everyone with respect and talk to them and talk about others in a way you would want to be talked about.
Stacey Abrams, Didn’t Play It Safe. Neither Do These Female Candidates.
Stacey Abrams explains how many women of color face many challenges when running for any political position. The author uses, Ayanna Pressley, the first black women to serve Boston’s City Council. She felt like she had to work twice as hard to win over everybody when running against a white male. Also with our president today, Donald Trump makes many remarks on how he feels about women. Many women are confronting president Donald Trump and winning seats and offices to prove more than just one point.
I relate this text to the New York Times Article, “Unlearning The Myths That Blinds by Linda Christensen. The author of this article explains how many men see women as not workers and only stay at home moms that cook, cleans and takes care of the children. Although it’s not common to see a women running for a powerful position.
You made great points. It's up to us as teacher and just as importantly their parents to end the stigma of sexism in our society. I also really like the comics you chose, then definitely help back up your points.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Christian, especially with what you said about women of color not having a fair shot in the political field.
